Beric, the young protagonist of G.A. Henty's novel, has recently been promoted the chief of his tribe, the Iceni, when he is captured by invading Roman armies. Beric is taken to Rome, where he must perform as a gladiator. Only after prolonged dangers and adventure will he see his native Britain yet again. Beric's story is rich in real history, containing characters such as Queen Boudica and Nero.

I fell in love with this wonderful book by G. A. Henty! It's full of courage, bravery, honesty, and incredibly fascinating war strategies on the part of ancient Britain against powerful Rome. I absolutely loved this tale and marvel at Henty's ability to skillfully intertwine history and fiction in such a way that it could almost be considered fact! DEFINITELY something I would want my children to read when they became teens. I wish I could put twenty stars on the rating. Anyone looking for good books should read this. This era in history was VERY important for the first few generations of Christians as they struggled and strive to follow Christ in a woefully and decidedly anti-Christian world. Just about all of Jesus' disciples were martyred during this time. I think another book that is equally motivating and thought-provoking is The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglass, which is a novel concentrated on what happened to Jesus' clothes after they were gambled for at the foot of the cross. I think there is a movie about it that's older but is still pretty good. I don't know if there is a movie about Beric the Briton, but if there is I would certainly want to watch it. The book is awesome!💙📖

Beric the Briton A Story of the Roman Invasion G A Henty 9781478256533 Books Reviews

I didn't enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed "Wulf the Saxon". There was just a slight section of the Book dedicated to events in Britain. The rest of the story occurred in Rome and Italy. I would really have much preferred to have read more about Britain and the rebellions & defeats in the battles against the invading Romans.

Christianity IS a part of the story. None of the major Biblical Characters. But the faith, the persecutions, the catacombs are all there.

Boadicea and the Iceni do appear in the story, but only briefly. Nero is there quite a bit. But at least he is not presented as having played the Fiddle while Rome burned.

The story seemed "contrived" to me. It's hard to explain, but throughout all of the events that happened to him, Beric always landed on his feet, suffered very little, was always the leader, never did anything stupid (like the rest of us!). Had he been Irish, I'd have said he must have been born in a Bed of Four Leaf Clovers with a Four Leaf Clover indelibly stamped upon his very existence.

In spite of the above, it was still enjoyable reading. And I DID read the whole Book! The first time!
Great story and well told. The problem for me was it's written in a sort of exotic tone with all the dialogue in that same exalted form. Though raised in a Roman household, a 'barbarian' native would not speak in an exalted tone as would the elite Roman characters. That diminished the characters somewhat for me. Other than that, the story was enjoyable.
The teeny-tiny print in this book completely spoils it. I ordered a number of G.A. Henty books for my son for Christmas this year, from various publishers. They are all fine except this one. We had studied the history of early Britain in our home school and my son would have loved this book. However, I'm not going to give it to him. Why? Because the printing is so small that even a child with perfect eyesight will have a miserable time trying to read it.A kid should not have to work so hard to read a book. What were the publishers trying to do, save paper?
This is a superb re-enactment of Henty's work. It's Braveheart and the Gladiator and Ben Hur all rolled into one glorious audio production. I admit that I rely on well-produced audio entertainment. Keeps my children quiet in the backseat. Well worth the purchase.
All of the Heirloom Audio GA Henty audio dramatizations have been fantastic. My 10, 8 & 8 year olds kids really, really like these. I enjoy listening to them as well. Could not recommend these any higher.
This book tells of one country who tries to rule and crush another under its authority is soon beaten. The Briton's just wanted to be left alone and rule their people in peace where the Romans wanted it all and suffered the consequences. In the end there finally was peace between the two. It was an enjoyable read
I could have been reading a modern historical fiction had i not known the context for the author and his wonderful vernacular of the time....much learned by the deliberate allegories displayed with optimism and fine result. I feel i know the respective histories and relationships between early Roman,European and northern tribes as to how they have subsided today. I think Americans have this cliche, abbreviated understanding of the extensive histories overseas, and this antiquated author has taken me to the earliest cognitive Times in their destinies. What a great insight it has been.
